You know a device is bad when the CEO maligns it.

RIM CEO on BlackBerry Storm: "nobody gets it perfect out the door"
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/16/rim-ceo-on-blackberry-storm-nobody-gets-it-perfect-out-the-doo/

From Engadget: "'That's our first touch product, and you know nobody
gets it perfect out the door. You know other companies were having
problems with their first releases.' If you're struggling to translate
that into layman speak, allow us: 'Tough luck, early adopters!'"

Oh lovely, PDF exploit is more exploitive

http://blog.didierstevens.com/2009/03/04/quickpost-jbig2decode-trigger-trio/
So the PDF document, in fact, doesn't have to be opened but merely
"interacted with" because of the Windows Explorer Shell Extension that
Adobe installs along with Reader and Acrobat.

Good job Adobe, good job Microsoft.

watching the young advance in all electric

A wordy explanation of the Amazon meltdown.
Summary: the server-to-server messaging got corrupted. (Edit: God I wish I worked in a place that had proper server-to-server messaging).

You may have seen the Flip camcorder series.  (In short : $130-180, 620x480 @ 30fps but in a mutant MPEG-4 AVI codec that didn't pop directly into Quicktime)

Apparently Kodak is about to one-up it in a big way: $180, 1280x720(!) @ 60fps (!!!) straight into H.264 MOV files

The Flip has integrated memory and power (well, the Mino has an internal battery, the Ultra and Video versions also use exchangeable batteries) while the Zi6 uses user supplied memory and batteries.
Says, "Available in August" but Amazon has it slated for October.

"Perfect Evidence" ICE on Mars!

"It must be ice," said Phoenix Principal Investigator Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson. "These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice. There had been some question whether the bright material was salt. Salt can't do that."

Dark, Dry and Connected

Okay, so it's been... you know... a year.

I post on this occasion to give a toast to Science!

Southern Florida had a major power outage today. About 30 minutes ago, so did north central Florida, although probably not as severe. (At least I hope not as severe).

So I'm typing on my PowerBook by fluorescent light lantern and connected to the Tubes by my mobile broadband modem. It's almost justifying its monthly cost.

Tonight is River's first major storm and power outage. He's spooked but not shivering scared.
