What a Cruddy Weekend
So I got all the parts finally together for a PC.
Case? Check. (Although with a feeble power supply).
CDRW? Check.
Hard Drive? Check.
RAM? Check.
Motherboard? Check.
CPU? Check.
Floppy? NO! Floppies are dead, Steve has spoken.
Video Card? Check.
Sound Card? Check.
Alright, ready to go. Throw in the board, the CPU, the RAM and the video card just to get a minimal boot. Flip the power and... nada. Lights come on, fans whir, but no boot, no POST (beep error code).
Hm. Okay. Try it without the video card. Nothing.
Hm. Okay. Try it without the RAM. Nothing.
Hm. Okay. Try it without the CPU. Nothing. WTF!?
So I start searching the Web (using my Power Mac Cube, by the way) and find out the new superduper motherboards with the nForce2 chipset (regardless of the manufacturer) has issues about the BIOS getting corrupted. Nice.
The fix? Get a new BIOS chip or send the board back. Oh and this could happen anytime you make a change in the BIOS. Niiiiiiice.
So I boxed it up and am shipping it back today for a refund (shipping is my expense -- Nice).
And that boys and girls, is why I'll be getting a Power Mac G5 as soon as I can clear the credit cards.
I'm currently looking into VIA based boards with the new KT600 chipset. They might not defeat the nForce2 boards, but at least they'll... you know... function.
I heart PCs.
