Sweaty Triumph
So my 12" Powerbook has been my main computer for over a year now. To Germany and back. Monday, however, it started stalling and the hard drive making repetitious grinding noises. On the web I found references to some having similar issues and resolving it by leaning to one side. Sure enough, it worked. But that meant the drive was going bad. (MTBF, my ass). So anyway, a fast order from Newegg I've got a faster hard drive with twice the capacity.
Making a backup before switching the drives was a farce. First I made an image onto an external Firewire drive; that went fine. Burning DVDs however just got plain stupid. The process takes forever: Copy, burn, verify, repeat. 90 minutes per disc for 7 discs and then the fifth blank disc was dirty, as was the remaining three others. GRR! So I had to drive to Best Buy today. At least the prices have gone down since last year. And then after all that, the backup failed because I didn't have enough space on the (bad) hard drive.
The trick was getting into the guts of the thing. Oy! Over 20 screws. Yeesh. Couldn't have done it without the guides at PB Fixit.
Panther's restore from image feature is beautiful. Better than Symantec's Ghost.
Saved my azzle. (Been playing too much GTA: San Andreas)!
