FTTM*

What with all the Mars Pr0n coming out, the discussion at work has leaned towards bandwidth. Currently data from Spirit is topping out at 128,000 bits per second via MGS and Odyssey. Naturally the question arises, "Gee, what would it take to up the upload rate? How about a dedicated comm satellite?"

Sure enough, NASA is on the job: the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter

6 million bits per second using a 3 meter dish, nice.

Elsewhere, an article about Apple's internal IT setup. What a surprise! They eat their own dogfood and it just works! Shocking.

"He also made the case that less administration is needed for Macs, pointing out that the company has just 27 IT workers on its help desk. That's one help desk person for each 433 employees, about half to a quarter of what research firm Gartner estimates are needed by typical corporations."

I love my job, I love, my job, I...

*Fiber To The Mars, as opposed to FTTH ("Fiber To The Home"). It's a broadband joke.

Year of the Rat (Race)

A few days rest... or complete and total loafing.

New year, same old job. Maybe the return to a daily schedule will help my out-of-whack sleeping get back into whack... maybe not.

There's a Stevenote today. A little bit of cheese...
